About Theatre In Motion

Go Back

A rare adventure in theatre is here to soon engulf the entire nation…A never before movement to make theater an everyday entertainment for people across the country…A professionally managed operation tying up venues, theatre groups, sponsors and audiences so that every city gets to see the best of theater from other cities across the country. And all this is being done by Utkal Rangamanch Trust.

Utkal Rangamanch Trust was the brainchild of Anant Mahapatra, a renowned theatre personality of Odisha, and was set up in 1997. The trust was established to give a fillip to professional theatre in Odisha after the old theatre companies of the early fifties closed down in the seventies.

URT made conscientious efforts to popularise theatre and staged plays on a weekly basis. Beginning in May 1999, URT went on to produce more than 20 plays which had been staged on 500 nights by 2006. It also organized theatre festivals every year with groups from outside Odisha taking part. The ‘Women Directors Special Festival 2005’ in particular needs a special mention as many plays from SAARC countries were staged for one week at a stretch.

URT now has an ambitious plan to organize plays in different cities of India, under the aegis of Theatre In Motion, with organisational support of Sanket Communications, a leading communications agency of the country. The curtain will go up on 5th October 2013.

Theatre in motion proposes to integrate the Indian theatre fraternity and hold regular ticketed shows at three major metros of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. The groups from each of these cities will travel to the other and stage plays every weekend on rotation.

Initially, well known groups from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata will be invited to perform to galvanise the movement. At a later stage, good and emerging talent too will be given a chance to join in. And to make this a pan India Theatre Scene, in future, we intend to take it to audiences in other important cities of the country like Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Bhopal, Indore, Guwahati and more.
