Ekjute was the brainchild of Nadira Zaheer Babbar and Raj Babbar. Both graduated from National School of Drama and from then on have been an integral part of the theatre movement in India. Raj Babbar set his eyes on the world of cinema but Nadira Babbar has kept on with her efforts to make meaningful plays. Ekjute was formed in 1981 and since then, the group has been experimenting with change in the Hindi theatre. Among the works which have been adapted for plays by the group, Agha Hashr Kashmiri, Bertolt Brecht, Bhas, Albert Camus, Badal Sircar, Jaywant Dalvi, John Osborne, Eugene O’Neil are the most notable.

Ekjute has also joined hands with some of the eminent artists of India like M.F.Hussain; compelling Kathak exponents in India like Pandita Uma Dogra; Kathakali experts like Guru Sri C.Gopalakrishnan, and more, to take the theatre movement forward. Besides becoming a prominent name in India, Ekjute has also made its name in countries like United Kingdom, United States, Pakistan, Dubai, Singapore, Muscat, Bahrain, Iran, and Germany.
